The beginning of the 21st century saw an evolution of what the phrase "Business Process Management" meant. During the late 1990s, BPM referred to business process Modeling, now considered just one part of business process Management. The technology tools that had been developed to model business processes were expanded to incorporate control activities, monitoring, execution and other elements.

BPM as currently understood bears a strong resemblance to the training programs in Electronic Records Management offered by AIIM. Each approach combines more technical information with a broader understanding of workflow. In fact, AIIM is offering a new
training program specifically focused on BPM.
